For a website, a Developer creates programs running on the server that provides functionalities and interacts with the users.

On Host Thyself, a developer refers to the person who create backend web applications. Increasingly there is a strong requirement for developer to have frontend engineering knowledge which we group under the Designer role.

Although the developer needs a certain level of understanding of the system that the website runs on, the role of creating program/scripts to run and maintain the server is separately covered by the SysAdmin role.
